  1. Welcome to Wishbone(TM) Print Tricks.

  3. This "Read Me" file contains the latest information 
  4. about running Wishbone Print Tricks to insure the 
  5. best playing experience possible.  Please
  6. refer to the printed manual for more instructions.
  7. Also, please refer to the printed "On-line Guide" 
  8. for details on configuring Print Tricks to launch
  9. your browser and going on-line to the Print Tricks 
  10. members only web site.

  13. System Requirements
  14. ====================

  16. To run Print Tricks, your Windows PC must have at 
  17. least:
  18.  
  19.  - A 66 MHz 486 processor
  20.  - 8 MB RAM for Windows 3.1x  or Windows 95 
  21.    (16 MB recommended)
  22.  - 30 MB free hard disk space (5 for application + 
  23.    25 temporary for print spooling at run time)
  24.  - A double speed CD-ROM
  25.  - A printer (Color Ink-Jet recommended)
  26.  - SVGA video (640x480 resolution with 256 colors)
  27.  - 8-bit sound card (optional)

  29. To connect to the Print Tricks web site, you must 
  30. also have:
  31.     
  32.  - A 14.4 Kbps modem (28.8 Kbps recommended)
  33.  - Netscape Navigator version 2.0 or later, or
  34.    Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 or later
  35.  - A subscription to an Internet Service Provider 
  36.    (ISP), or America On-line 3.0 or later

  40. Opening/Logos Screen

  44. key to skip the animated logos.

  50. control-S  Turns button press sounds off and on.
  51. control-V  Displays or hides the software version 
  52.            number.
  53. control-Q  Quits the application.

  58. Clicking on wishbone turns help on and off. When help 
  59. is on, the Wishbone voice will describe the action of 
  60. buttons and hot-spots as the cursor moves over them.

  69. Importing Pictures
  70. ==================

  72. All formats - The program will not let you import a 
  73.               very large picture. (Larger than 1024 
  74.               pixels on a side.)
  75. .BMP files - All types are supported.
  76. .JPG files - All types are supported.
  77. .TIF files - Only 256-color images which use packbits 
  78.              compression or are uncompressed are 
  79.              supported.

  82. Printing
  83. ========

  85. Known printer driver bugs affecting Wishbone Print 
  86. Tricks:
  87. 1)  On HP DeskJet 600 series printers, when printing 
  88.   banners and a print is canceled the printer can be 
  89.   put in a state that will cause crashes of the printer
  90.   or printing software later.  This can happen when 
  91.   using Wishbone Print Tricks or any other software 
  92.   which uses various fonts at a very large size on a 
  93.   multipage document. 
  94. 2)  Using several HP printers drivers, if a print of a 
  95.   multipage document is canceled, temporary (EMF and 
  96.   spool) files can be left on the system. These are 
  97.   normally left in the \windows\temp and \windows\spool
  98.   \printers folders. They will remain on the system 
  99.   until a user removes them.
  100. 3)  With several HP printer drivers, there is a small 
  101.   amount of memory that is lost each time the print 
  102.   dialog is used (3-400 bytes).  This memory is 
  103.   recovered when the system is re-booted. 
  104. 4)  On the HP 1200c PCL printer, when color matching 
  105.   is used, a dotted pattern is printed under text and 
  106.   pictures.  This can be avoided by not using color 
  107.   matching.  Other printers/drivers with special 
  108.   color-matching modes may also exhibit this problem.  
  109.   To avoid it, don't use the special modes.

  118. Wishbone Print Tricks Art Packs Download Instructions
  119.  
  120. To download additional art packs to use within Print 
  121. Tricks, go on-line through your CD-ROM.  Once you have 
  122. accessed the "Art Packs" area:
  123.  
  124. On Windows 95 and Windows 3.1
  125. 1.  Download the files (preferably to the Wishbone 
  126.     directory), then
  127. 2.  Copy the .WIF files to the "Readymad" directory 
  128.     within Wishbone
  129. 3.  Copy the .DLD files to the "Pictures" directory 
  130.     within Wishbone
  131. 4.  The files should appear in the program immediately 
  132.     in their appropriate areas (Downloads, Export, and 
  133.     their own category)

  137. Uninstalling
  138. ============
  139.  
  140. To remove Wishbone Print Tricks software, use the 
  141. Uninstall program in the Wishbone program group.  This 
  142. will remove all files that were created during 
  143. installation except the fonts.  Files you created (like
  144. saved or downloaded ReadyMades or exported Pictures) 
  145. will remain until you delete them or the folder 
  146. containing them.   
  147.  
  148. To delete fonts on Windows 95 use Start->Settings->
  149. Control Panel->Fonts then right-click on the font to be 
  150. removed and select DELETE.
  151.  
  152. To delete fonts on Windows 3.1 open the Control Panel, 
  153. open the fonts control panel, select a font from the 
  154. list and press the delete button.  
  155.

  175. Troubleshooting
  176. ===============

  178. Animation and Sound:
  179.  
  180. If you are experiencing problems with animation or 
  181. sound:
  182.  
  183. 1. Set your monitor graphics mode to display 640x480 
  184. resolution with 256 colors.
  185.  
  186. 2. Before running Print Tricks, exit all running 
  187. programs, including those that run automatically when 
  188. you start Windows (such as screen savers and toolbars).
  189.  
  190. 3. Computers with slower components (66 MHz 486's, 
  191. 60 MHz Pentiums, 2X CD-ROM drives) or smaller memories 
  192. (8 MB RAM) may exhibit poor audio/video performance 
  193. and long delays (loads) between screens.
  194.  
  195. 4. If you have no sound card there will be a delay of 
  196. several seconds after a button press before the action 
  197. is performed.  This is to allow time for the sound to 
  198. play.  To avoid this delay, press control-s.  This 
  199. disables the button sounds, even if there is a sound 
  200. card.  Note that pressing control-s again will turn 
  201. button sounds back on.
  202.  
  203. 5. Before you start installing PrintTricks, you have to
  204. have a line setting the TEMP environmental variable in 
  205. your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The line usually looks like 
  206. SET TEMP=C:\TEMP. This is usually no problem because 
  207. the Windows puts this line for you during Windows 
  208. installation. However, if for any reason it ever got 
  209. deleted from there, you have to put it back into the
  210. file before the installation can proceed normally.

  213. Going On-line: 
  214.  
  215. If you have trouble visiting the Print Tricks web site 
  216. from within the Print Tricks program:
  217.  
  218. 1.  Run Browser Setup to configure Print Tricks to 
  219. launch your browser.
  220.  
  221. 2.  Make sure that your browser and dialer are 
  222. configured to connect to your ISP, then try launching 
  223. your browser to a well-known web page BEFORE running 
  224. Print Tricks and going on-line.  If you don't see the 
  225. web page (make sure it's not "cached" on your hard 
  226. drive), call your ISP for support.  If you do see the 
  227. web page, try launching your browser to 
  228. http://www.parroty.com next.  If you can't enter the 
  229. Parroty site, our web server may be busy or 
  230. unavailable, so please try again later.
  231.  
  232. 3. You must run Browser Setup after installing the 
  233. AT&T Worldnet browser, or any updated browser you 
  234. choose to install later.
  235.  
  236. 4. On Windows 95, Browser Setup will not find 16-bit 
  237. versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer.  Microsoft 
  238. does not support running 16-bit Internet Explorer 
  239. under WIndows 95.
  240.

  242. Printing:
  243.  
  244. This product prints photo/bitmap type documents using 
  245. high-resolution data.  This involves very large print 
  246. files, often 10 MB or more for a single page.  If 
  247. system memory (RAM) is small (8 MB) and/or unused
  248. disc (swap) space is limited (25-100 MB), then printing 
  249. can be slower and may fail when multiple items are 
  250. printed at the same time.  If the system has run out 
  251. of disc/swap space, re-booting usually clears the 
  252. problem.

  254. If printing fails often, try freeing up more disc 
  255. space (delete unused data files and remove unused 
  256. software) for use as virtual memory.  Also, try let 
  257. one item finish printing completely before printing 
  258. another.
  259.  
  260. On Windows 95, if you have changed Virtual Memory from 
  261. the default settings, be sure to allow enough for 
  262. printing large documents.  To check this use: 
  263. Start->Settings->Control Panel->System->Performance->
  264. Virtual Memory.  The default is to let Windows manage 
  265. the virtual memory settings.
  266.  
  267. Sometimes, printing problems can be fixed by 
  268. installing an updated version of the driver for your 
  269. printer.  These are normally available from the 
  270. manufacturer on their web-site and/or bulletin board.  
  271. For a copy on disc, contact the printer manufacturer.
